Seniors and hydration: Important Tips for the Summer
We found this great article posted on The Mufreesboro Post regarding seniors and hydration. All too often, our services are called upon after a loved one has taken a fall as a result of an un-diagnosed UTI. Dehydration in seniors can cause UTIs which lead to dizziness, hallucinations, confusion and erratic behavior. All of the behaviors may lead to a devastating event such as a fall.
As a caregiver for your loved one, please be sure to encourage them to drink plenty of clear fluids throughout the day, especially if they are suffering from dementia. If you are not certain of how much fluid they should be taking in, it is always recommended to consult their physician.
Quick Tips for Staying Hydrated Throughout the Summer and All Year Round
- Keep fluids accessible.
- Limit outdoor activities when the weather is extremely warm.
- Check on your loved ones daily.
- Urge your loved ones to use a medical alert in the event of a fall.
- Encourage other foods high in fluid such as applesauce, yogurt, grapes and carrots.
